The news of Sushant Singh Rajput’s untimely demise on June 14 has left the country in a state of shock. Even as his family, friends and fans grapple with the loss, condolence messages keep pouring in for the 34-year-old actor on social media.
In the same breath, Bollywood’s treatment of newcomers, especially those who are not star-kids and are supposedly outsiders in the industry, has also come under scrutiny. Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, on Monday, had said that the police will investigate all angles pertaining to Sushant’s suicide, including that of a professional rivalry brought to light by the media.
Bandra police, who has been investigating the case, has now called for a copy of the contract that was signed between Sushant Singh Rajput and Yash Raj Films (YRF). Sushant had worked in two YRF films – Shuddh Desi Romance in 2013, his second film, and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! in 2015. It was widely reported at the time that Sushant had bagged a three-movie deal with the production banner. Sushant’s film with Shekhar Kapur, Paani, which was announced at Cannes, was supposed to be bankrolled by Yash Raj. However, the film was later shelved.
Meanwhile, statements of 13 people, including Sushant Singh Rajput’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, friend Mukesh Chhabra, his father and his three sisters were recorded. His family haven’t made any official complaint. The provisional post-mortem report acquired by the police also didn’t reveal any foul play. The cause of death, as per the report, was asphyxiation due to hanging.
Sushant Singh Rajput’s family had come down to Mumbai from Patna to perform his last rites. The funeral went through on Jun 15 at Pawan Hans Crematorium in the presence of his family and a few close friends. The family then went back to Patna to immerse his ashes in Ganga on June 17.
