Bollywood Legend Dharmendra Passes Away at 89

Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, fondly remembered as “He-Man” and “Dharam Paaji,” passed away earlier today at the age of 89, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy spanning more than six decades, the Indian Media said.

The iconic star, born Dharmendra Singh Deol, breathed his last at his residence. He had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital earlier this month due to respiratory complications.

News of his passing has sent shockwaves across the country. Fans, colleagues, and prominent figures from the film fraternity expressed profound grief, remembering the superstar whose contribution to Indian cinema remains unmatched.

Dharmendra made his acting debut in 1960 and quickly rose to stardom, earning fame for his versatility and effortless charm. From romantic leads to intense action roles, he brought life to a wide range of characters with remarkable ease. With over 300 films to his credit, many of his works have achieved cult status.

Among his most iconic performances is the role of Veeru in the timeless classic Sholay. He also delivered unforgettable roles in Phool Aur Patthar, Seeta Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, Dharam Veer, and Pratigya. His screen presence, grounded acting style, and endearing personality earned him millions of admirers in India and across the globe.

In recognition of his immense contribution to cinema, Dharmendra received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. He was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, in 2012.

Dharmendra was last seen in the 2024 film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, where he played the role of Shahid Kapoor’s grandfather. He also featured in the blockbuster Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, garnering widespread praise for his heartfelt performance. His final film, Ikkis, starring Agastya Nanda, in which he also plays a grandfatherly role, will now stand as his cinematic farewell.

The legendary actor is survived by his wife, actress Hema Malini; his first wife, Prakash Kaur; and his children, including actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, and daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.

Dharmendra’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. Though he is no longer with us, his timeless performances and extraordinary body of work will continue to inspire future generations and captivate audiences for years to come.
