President approves appointment of Asim Munir as new COAS

ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi on Thursday signed the forwarded summary of Lt General Syed Asim Munir as new Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) and Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as new Joint Chief of Staff Committee (CJCSC) of Pakistan Army. The notification for the appointment of Lt General Asim Munir as new COAS and Lt General Sahir Shamshad Miraz as New CJCSC would be issued tomorrow, the sources said.
The President just signed the summary after reaching Islamabad after a short meeting with the Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-instaff Imran Khan in Lahore.
President Arif Alvi arrived at Zaman Park to reportedly meet Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and deposed prime minister Imran Khan after the latter said that the two would “work” together on the appointment of a new army chief.
In the afternoon, the Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has approved the name of Lt General Syed Asim Munir as new COAS and Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza CJCSC of Pakistan Army. The advice were forwarded to the President of Pakistan for the signature.
Earlier, this was disclosed by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Minister of Information Marriyum Aurangzeb that the Prime Minister has approved the name of new COAS and CJCSC. Khawaja Asif said before the media, “Prime Minister picked two names top of the list sent by the General Headquarter yesterday.”
Yesterday, GHQ of Pakistan Army through a tweet confirmed that a summary for the selection of CJCSC and COAS had been forwarded to the Prime Minister office on Tuesday.
The Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) tweet had said, “GHQ has forwarded the summary for selection of CJCSC and COAS, containing names of 6 senior most Lt Gens to MoD.”
The ISPR statement didn’t mention the names of potential candidates. However, the list includes names of Lt General Asim Munir, Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Lt General Azhar Abbas, Lt General Numan Mahmud, Lt General Faiz Hameed and Lt General Muhammad Amir.
On Thursday, after receiving the summary, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif selected two names from the list forwarded by GHQ and forwarded to the President of Pakistan Arif Alvi for signature. It is being hoped that President of Pakistan will give the final approval for the appointment of COAS and CJCSC today.
Chief Of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa is going to retire from his post on November 29, 2022.
