ISLAMABAD: General Head Quarter (GHQ) of Pakistan Army through a tweet confirmed that a summary for the selection of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has been forwarded to the Prime Minister office on Tuesday.

The Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) tweet said, “GHQ has forwarded the summary for Selection of CJCSC and COAS, containing names of 6 senior most Lt Gens to MoD.”

After this confirmation from the Ary Head Quarter, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has also confirmed regarding the summery on Wednesday that Prime Minister’s office received. The Defence Minister said that the remaining procedure to appoint the CJCSC and COAS would also be completed soon.

According to the reports from Islamabad, the government officials of the PM’s House and the Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said the summary regarding the COAS’s appointment had not been received so far.

In a tweet, she claimed, “the statement attributed to Defence Minister Khawaja Asif is incorrect.” She further said the speculation on the matter should be avoided. She said information would be shared whenever the summary was received.

The tweet released by the DGISPR brought some clarity to the confusion, as the summary had been received by the defense ministry, which would now send it to the PM Office on Wednesday.

The ISPR statement didn’t mention the names of potential candidates. However, it is believed that the list includes Lt General Asim Munir, Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Lt General Azhar Abbas, Lt General Numan Mahmud, Lt General Faiz Hameed and Lt General Muhammad Amir, a private TV Channel said.

After receiving the summary from the GHQ, the Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was expected to choose the new military chief within the next 24 hours. “It will take a total of 48 hours,” Khawaja Asif said.

Chief Of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa is going to retire from his post on November 29, 2022.
