The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday announced discovery of new huge natural gas reservoirs on Dubai-Abu Dhabi border estimated to be 80 trillion cubic feet.

The new reservoirs will help achieve the goal of self-sufficiency in natural gas supplies and support the country’s major development projects in the coming years.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, tweeted: “With my brother Mohammed bin Zayed, I witnessed the signing of an agreement between Adnoc and Dusup to develop one of the largest gas fields discovered between the emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with reserves of 80 trillion cubic feet.”

This is second major gas discovery in the UAE in the last 10 days and third major in the last one month.

On January 27, Sharjah announced that it had made “historic” onshore gas discovery after 37 years in Mahani-1 field with flow rates of up to 50 million standard cubic feet per day.

Earlier in January 2020, Abu Dhabi had made a huge discovery of 58 trillion standard cubic feet of conventional gas, taking the total reserves of gas to 273 trillion cubic feet.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of Sharjah Oil Council, said Mahani discovery will make sustained gas supplies available throughout the UAE.
