KU & Naurus sign MoU, initiates plantation drive

Naurus Pvt. Ltd. would provide at least 1000 plants mainly fruit plants to the KU

The University of Karachi and Naurus (Private) Limited on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding to launch a plantation drive on the campus. The Secretary Landscape Gardening Council KU Dr Muhammad Faheem Siddiqui and the Executive Director Naurus Pvt. Ltd. Tajammul Hussain Chishti inked the MoU documents.

According to the MoU, Naurus Pvt. Ltd. would provide at least 1000 plants mainly fruit plants to the KU. The signing ceremony was held at the KU Vice Chancellor Secretariat which was attended by the KU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, Registrar Professor Dr Abdul Waheed, Dean Arts, and Social Sciences Professor Dr Nasreen Aslam Shah, Dean Sciences Professor Dr Nasira Khatoon, the Director Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization Professor Dr Alyia Rehman, Campus Security Advisor Dr Moiz Khan, the Chief Executive Officer Naurus Pvt. Ltd. Zafar Mehmood Shaikh, the Director Naurus Pvt. Ltd. Waheed Zafar and others were also present on this occasion.

The CEO Naurus Zafar Shaikh informed the participants that his company has also provided an electric lawnmower and an electric chainsaw and an advanced computer to the LGC KU. He said that Naurus would provide the plants to the campus whereas KU would look after them.

Tajammul Chishti shared that being alumni of the KU, they would like to contribute to the betterment and development of the campus and this plantation drive is part of it. He expressed that industries should take a major part in the development of academia and hoped that this contribution would further extend in near future.

Earlier, Secretary LGC KU Muhammad Faheem Siddiqui while giving a briefing to the participants said that local fruit plants are selected for this plantation drive. He informed that visitors that KU has used drip irrigation and pitcher irrigation techniques in previous plantation drives which were launched in collaboration with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and Rotary Club (Karsaz) in the recent past.

He said that KU is also working on the urban forest and block plantation and 25 acres of land have already been Allocated for this project. The KU and Sindh Forest and Wildlife Department are jointly working on this project.

On this occasion, the KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi expressed that joint efforts are required to reduce the frequency of climate change hazards in Karachi, and termed that such projects would be helpful in this regard.

He mentioned that collective efforts are required to face these challenges and hoped that public and private sectors should launch plantation drives across the city. He believed that these measures would help in slowing down climate change and create a greener environment.

The KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi also appreciated the role of alumni and said that this is a very good sign that alumni are coming forward and contributing to the development of their alma mater.

Later, the plantation drive was officially started by planting plant saplings of lime, Jungle Jaleebi, Java Plum, Tamarind, and Jujube at the Sardar Yasin Malik School University of Karachi.
