Pakistan’s Total Debt Rise to Rs99.59trn by June 2026
KARACHI: Pakistan’s total debt and liabilities increased to Rs99.587 trillion by the end of June 2026, up from Rs94.387 trillion a year earlier, according to the latest data released by the State Bank of Pakistan here on Wednesday.
The country’s total debt and liabilities rose by Rs5.2 trillion, or around 5.5%, during the fiscal year 2025-26. Total debt, excluding liabilities, stood at Rs97.878 trillion in June 2026, compared with Rs91.582 trillion in June 2025.
Gross government domestic debt increased to Rs59.441 trillion from Rs54.472 trillion a year earlier, showing an increase of Rs4.969 trillion, the SBP data said.
Pakistan’s external debt also rose to Rs36.198 trillion by June 2026 from Rs35.095 trillion in June 2025.
Government external debt stood at Rs24.201 trillion, while non-government external debt amounted to Rs7.438 trillion. The country’s debt from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) increased to Rs3.073 trillion from Rs2.630 trillion.
Total liabilities declined to Rs3.423 trillion in June 2026 from Rs4.459 trillion a year earlier. External liabilities fell to Rs2.414 trillion from Rs3.392 trillion, while domestic liabilities declined slightly to Rs1.009 trillion from Rs1.067 trillion.
Debt Servicing Declines
Pakistan’s total debt and liabilities servicing declined to Rs11.966 trillion in fiscal year 2026 from Rs13.161 trillion in the same period last year.
Interest payments on debt fell significantly to Rs7.266 trillion from Rs9.466 trillion a year earlier. Interest payments on gross government domestic debt declined to Rs5.988 trillion from Rs8.083 trillion, while interest payments on external debt fell to Rs1.278 trillion from Rs1.383 trillion.
However, principal repayments of external debt and liabilities increased to Rs4.466 trillion in fiscal year 2026 from Rs3.467 trillion compared to 2025.
Government external debt and liabilities accounted for Rs2.877 trillion of the principal repayments, compared with Rs2.231 trillion a year earlier. Non-government external debt repayments fell to Rs463 billion from Rs811 billion, while repayments of the country’s IMF debt declined to Rs163 billion from Rs425 billion.
The SBP’s latest figures show that while Pakistan’s overall debt and liabilities continued to rise, the country recorded a notable decline in debt servicing during fiscal year 2026, primarily due to lower interest payments.
Pakistan’s Central Government Debt Rises to Rs83.64 Trillion by June 2026
Pakistan’s central government debt increased to Rs83.642 trillion by the end of June 2026, up from Rs79.334 trillion in January, the SBP data said adding that the debt rose by Rs4.308 trillion, or around 5.4%, during the six-month period.
Domestic debt stood at Rs59.441 trillion in June 2026, compared with Rs55.990 trillion in January, registering an increase of Rs3.451 trillion.
The data shows that long-term domestic debt remained the largest component of the government’s borrowing. Pakistan Investment Bonds stood at Rs35.299 trillion in June, while long-term debt of more than one year amounted to Rs7.066 trillion.
Short-term domestic debt also increased substantially, reaching Rs10.928 trillion in June from Rs8.784 trillion in January.
