Six Dead as Kraków Shooting Sparks Terror Probe
Poland’s Kraków mass shooting has left six people dead and 16 injured, as authorities investigate a possible far-right extremist motive and examine three additional deaths at the suspect’s family home, CNN reported.
Poland has been left in shock following a deadly mass shooting in the historic city of Kraków. The attack, which took place on Saturday, November 7, has prompted national mourning and increased security measures across the country.
According to police, a 25-year-old Polish man drove into Kraków’s historic main market square at around 3 p.m. local time and opened fire randomly. The shooting killed six people, including four women and two men, while another 16 people sustained injuries.
Three Family Members Found Dead at Suspect’s Home
Authorities later discovered three bodies at the suspect’s family home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, approximately 120 miles northeast of Kraków.
Police identified the victims as the suspect’s mother, father and sister. Prosecutors said it was highly likely that the same individual was responsible for the killings in both locations. However, investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances.
The incident is also being examined as a possible terrorist attack, with investigators reportedly considering the suspect’s alleged far-right views as a potential motive.
Police Recover 11 Firearms
According to Polish authorities, the suspect wore military-style clothing and used military-grade weapons during the attack. Police also discovered a significant quantity of weapons and ammunition inside his vehicle.
Investigators recovered 11 firearms from the two crime scenes. Prosecutors said the number corresponds with the weapons permits issued to the suspect and his father.
Police officers shot and injured the alleged attacker before taking him to hospital. He subsequently underwent several surgeries and remained in a stable but critical condition, according to regional police officials.
Authorities have identified him as the only suspected perpetrator in the attack.
Poland Increases Security After Deadly Attack
The Kraków mass shooting has raised serious concerns about public safety in Poland, a country known for its strict firearms regulations and relatively low levels of gun violence.
The tragedy has also sparked widespread debate about extremist ideology and access to firearms.
Meanwhile, Poland’s Defence Minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, rejected reports suggesting that the suspect was a serving soldier. He clarified that the individual had never been associated with the military.
As investigations continue, Polish authorities are working to establish the suspect’s motives and determine whether the killings were connected to extremist beliefs.
