World’s largest container ships arrives at Karachi Port
KARACHI: The world’s largest container ships arrived at Karachi Port on Sunday, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan’s maritime industry and highlighting the country’s growing capacity to accommodate ultra-large cargo vessels as it seeks to modernize its ports and strengthen its role in regional and global trade.
The vessel, MSC ERICA, is among the largest container ships currently operating worldwide. Measuring 398.5 meters in length and 59 meters in width, the ship has a gross tonnage of 194,308 metric tons and a draft of 12 meters, making it one of the biggest vessels ever to call at a Pakistani port.
The massive container ship berthed at the South Asia Pakistan Terminals (SAPTL) on Sunday, where port authorities expect it to handle more than 3,000 containers before continuing its scheduled voyage to Dalian, China.
In a statement, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) described the arrival as an important achievement that demonstrates the port’s ability to safely receive and service ultra-large container vessels.
“One of the world’s largest container vessels arrived at Karachi Port on 12 July 2026, reaffirming its capability to handle ultra-large container ships,” the statement said.
According to KPT, the master of the MSC ERICA praised the professionalism and expertise of Karachi Port’s marine pilots, commending their safe navigation and ship-handling skills during the vessel’s arrival. The ship’s captain also appreciated the hospitality extended by port officials and described Karachi Port as “one of the best ports in the region.”
The successful berthing of the MSC ERICA reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to modernize its maritime infrastructure and improve operational efficiency at its ports. Over the past several years, authorities have invested in upgrading port facilities, expanding cargo-handling capacity, introducing digital customs systems and streamlining logistics operations to reduce turnaround times for international shipping lines.
The arrival of one of the world’s largest container vessels also comes shortly after Pakistan reported notable improvements in international port performance rankings. Earlier this month, officials announced that Karachi Port had climbed 30 positions to rank 69th globally, following measures aimed at enhancing cargo handling, improving customs clearance and increasing operational efficiency. Port Qasim also featured among the world’s most improved ports, reflecting broader progress across Pakistan’s maritime sector.
Industry experts believe the capability to receive ultra-large container ships such as the MSC ERICA offers several strategic advantages. Larger vessels can transport significantly more cargo in a single voyage, reducing shipping costs, improving logistical efficiency and strengthening connectivity with major international shipping routes.
The officials believe expanding the capacity to accommodate next-generation container ships will improve supply chain resilience, facilitate higher trade volumes and contribute to long-term economic growth.
