KARACHI: A Boing-320 plane of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has crashed in a congested area of Jinnah Garden, newly established residential area of Model Colony — about a kilometer away from Jinnah international Airport Karachi on Friday.
The plane arrived Karachi from Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore at 2.35 PM and was trying to land at Karachi Airports but unfortunately its lost one engine, the sources claimed.
According to the media reports and the sources, Sajjad Gul, who have vast experience pilot, informed the Control Room ‘there was loss of one engine’. While the source in aviation industry said that the landing-gear of PK-8303 was not working properly and the plane was asked to take a round of the airport.
As the flight reached at Jinnah Airport, it crashed in Jinnah Garden area of Model Colony because of low height about a kilometer away from the run-way. One of the plane engine stopped working, which caused the major reason of this crash, the media reported. According to a TV footage, the wheels of the plane were opened before the landing.
Only few passengers are reportedly survive in plane crash and the rescue sources have shifted them to nearby hospitals, but till the filling of this report, it would be difficult to say they are passengers of the plane or the residents, source in hospitals said.
President Bank of Punjab (BoP), Zafar Masood, resident of Mehmoodabad area Mohammad Zubair, and few others passengers or residents of the incident place survived, media sources claimed who are hospitalized in different hospitals.
The plane crashed in congested residential areas of Model Colony, in which around 15-20 houses were also destroyed, the sources said. According to eye witnesses, 8-10 houses totally damaged as the plane crashed on their roofs. Several people including women and children were buried in the debris.
According to hospital sources, 19 dead bodies and four injured persons were shifted to Jinnah Hospital, 18 dead bodies were shifted to Civil Hospital, while many others injured and dead bodies were shifted to different hospitals in nearby hospitals. Several bodies could not be identified.
According to the reports, 90 persons confirmed dead in the plane crash, while 3 reportedly survived.
After this incident, Police and law enforcing agencies, including Pak Army reached the spot while the Police and Rangers take over the control of the areas.
According to the initial information in the Airlines, there were 98 passengers in the plane, while eight staff members including the two pilots were onboard.
Prime Minister Imran Khan has ordered an inquiry of this crash immediately, while Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the airline have also started their separate investigation.
The rescue operation is going on in the area.
