KARACHI: Combining Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with solar and wind power can significantly reduce electricity costs, potentially as low as 6-8 cents per unit, revealed a recent study.
The study, conducted by Renewables First and the Policy Research Institute for Equitable Development, highlights the benefits of integrating BESS with renewable energy sources, including improved grid stability, peak support, and frequency regulation.
The researchers urge the government to create a supportive environment for market players, particularly by addressing hurdles in the Competitive Trading Bilateral Contracts Market (CTBCM). They warn that the national grid risks losing demand and market share as industrial and commercial consumers increasingly opt for off-grid solutions.
The study’s authors presented their findings to a gathering of energy industry representatives, government officials, academia, and media, emphasizing the potential for consistent and affordable power supply to industrial consumers through the integration of batteries and renewable energy sources.
A panel discussion featuring industry experts explored the benefits, challenges, and opportunities in combining BESS with renewable energy sources, highlighting the need for clear targets, policy frameworks, and technological advancements to drive the uptake of renewable energy solutions.
The study launch was marked by opening remarks from Muhammad Badar Alam, CEO of PRIED, who emphasized the need for data transparency and accountability in the power sector, which is facing a crisis due to past policy flaws and decisions.
