Iran Hosting Key Regional Security Meeting
The meeting will mark the first high-level contact between Iran and the three-country bloc since Saudi Arabia became more deeply involved in the broader conflict involving Iran
TEHRAN: Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye are expected to meet Iranian leaders in Tehran on Monday in a diplomatic effort to ease regional tensions amid escalating hostilities and growing concerns over a wider conflict, according to Reuters.
The meeting will mark the first high-level contact between Iran and the three-country bloc since Saudi Arabia became more deeply involved in the broader conflict involving Iran.
The Field Marshal Asim Munir has arrived in Tehran on official visit to meet with Iranian officials.
Saudi Arabia will be represented by Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Türkiye by intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin, Saudi and Iranian officials told Reuters.
Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei is also expected to hold security discussions with representatives of the visiting countries.
A senior Iranian official said the meeting was initiated by Pakistan during Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit to Tehran last week. During the visit, Munir met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior officials to discuss regional developments.
The planned talks come amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, continued fighting across the region, and increased activity by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement.
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that there would be no immediate military strike against Iran, telling reporters, “There will not be a strike today.” However, concerns remain that the broader conflict could resume, with both sides reportedly considering plans for renewed hostilities.
Meanwhile, Yemen’s conflict between the Saudi-backed internationally recognised government and the Iran-aligned Houthis continues, with no clear end in sight.
Israeli forces have also continued military operations in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, southern Lebanon and southern Syria despite ceasefire arrangements and diplomatic efforts to reduce violence.
Diplomatic efforts to prevent regional escalation
Qatari mediators met Iranian officials in Tehran on Sunday as part of efforts to reduce regional tensions, Reuters reported. Qatar has played a significant role in mediation between Tehran and Washington over recent months.
Previous mediation efforts involving Pakistan and Qatar helped secure an interim peace agreement in June, but the arrangement subsequently unravelled as fighting between Iran and the United States resumed.
Saudi Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy Rayed Krimly said the upcoming meeting forms part of ongoing efforts by the countries associated with the Mecca Pact to de-escalate the current crisis, promote diplomatic solutions and support mediation efforts led by Qatar and Pakistan.
In a statement posted on X, Krimly emphasised the role of the participating countries in promoting regional security and stability, adding that they remained committed to working with all countries in the region towards that objective.
Regional security and mutual trust
The Tehran meeting is expected to focus on regional security, diplomatic engagement and ways to prevent further escalation. The participation of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye could provide an opportunity to strengthen communication between regional powers and encourage a coordinated diplomatic response to the ongoing crisis.
With tensions involving Iran, the United States, Israel and regional actors continuing to threaten wider stability, the talks could represent an important attempt to rebuild trust and pursue diplomatic solutions.
However, the outcome will depend on whether the participating countries can translate their diplomatic engagement into practical measures to reduce hostilities and establish a more durable framework for regional peace and security.
