Iran Says Proposal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Remains on Table

US IRAN

DUBAI: Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days remains on the table, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Sunday, adding that Tehran was reviewing Washington’s response.

Iran submitted the proposal in mid-September after an interim ceasefire collapsed. Tehran later confirmed receiving a US response, but negotiations have stalled over seven conditions Iran has set for reopening the strategic waterway.

“Our proposal is still on the table,” Araqchi told Iranian media outlets while visiting Baghdad for a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

He said the path to reopening the strait was clear if Washington demonstrated what he described as genuine willingness to reach an agreement.

Iran’s conditions include lifting the US blockade on Iranian ports, removing sanctions on its oil exports and ending hostilities across all regional fronts.

Araqchi said the Strait of Hormuz could reopen within six days if Washington accepted Tehran’s conditions, with negotiations resuming the following day.

A key point of disagreement remains Washington’s demand that Iran’s nuclear programme be addressed from the outset of negotiations.

US Vice President JD Vance Urges Tehran to reduce Uranium enrichment

US Vice President JD Vance said earlier this month that Tehran must make a “meaningful” reduction in its uranium enrichment capacity to meet US demands and end the countries’ eight-month war.

Iran, however, insists that negotiations should initially focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring security in the waterway before addressing other issues.

The strait is a critical global energy route that carried about one-fifth of worldwide oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade before the war. Any agreement to reopen it could have significant implications for international energy supplies and shipping.

Saudi-led coalition says it intercepted, destroyed drone over Riyadh region

The Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed a drone over the Riyadh region, amid a surge in missile and drone attacks targeting the kingdom.

Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki al-Maliki announced the interception, according to a report carried by the Saudi Press Agency. The statement did not specify the drone’s origin or intended target.

The incident comes amid escalating attacks on Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Houthi group. In recent days, the kingdom has reported interceptions of drones and missiles targeting Riyadh, the Eastern Province and southern regions.

The escalation has also affected civilian infrastructure. Houthi attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh have caused casualties and disrupted air traffic, while Saudi authorities have reported damage from falling debris following interceptions.
