Pakistan Upgrading Business and Trade Laws, SECP Chairman
KARACHI: Pakistan is upgrading its business and trade laws in line with international standards while pursuing greater transparency and digitalization to promote investment and innovation, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) Chairman Kabir Ahmed Sidhu said.
Speaking in connection with the inauguration of the Pakistan operations of US technology company Mobiz in Karachi, Sidhu said the government was working to establish a transparent, efficient and technology-enabled regulatory environment to support businesses, investment and innovation.
He said the SECP was working to align regulations governing capital markets, insurance, non-bank financial services and corporate debt markets with international standards.
Sidhu said Pakistan’s young population possessed strong professional capabilities in technology, adding that the government aimed to position the country as an important regional hub for the global technology sector.
He said regulatory frameworks for the corporate sector, capital markets, insurance, non-bank financial services and corporate debt markets were being continuously simplified and modernised.
Mobiz CEO Hamad Riaz said the company was a specialist partner of Microsoft and provided services globally across eight information technology specialisations. Mobiz also operated across Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman.
Chairman of the Pakistan Disabled Foundation Shahid Memon praised Mobiz’s corporate social responsibility initiatives aimed at supporting persons with disabilities.
Technology experts Jehan Ara and Azfar Hussain highlighted opportunities for young Pakistanis in entrepreneurship and employment across emerging technology fields.
Meanwhile, Director General of the Sindh Authority for the Protection of Persons with Disabilities Ghulam Farooq Leghari welcomed Mobiz’s efforts to connect persons with disabilities with modern technology facilities and expressed a commitment to joint initiatives for their support.
Mobiz Head of Data and AI Dr Akbar Gardizi briefed participants on the company’s growing investment in Pakistan, saying Mobiz would provide software, artificial intelligence support and other technology facilities for people with special needs and disabilities.
