BEIJING: The Beijing International Automobile Exhibition 2026 opened Friday with unprecedented scale and ambition, underscoring China’s growing dominance in the global automotive industry. Held under the theme “Lead the Era, Intelligent Future,” the event spans a record 380,000 square meters across dual venues for the first time.

More than 2,000 companies from 21 countries and regions are participating, showcasing 1,451 vehicles, including 181 global premieres and 71 concept cars—both record highs for the show.

Domestic automakers took center stage, leveraging their lead in electrification and smart technologies. BYD and Chery each occupied entire exhibition halls, presenting multi-brand lineups. BYD featured its Dynasty, Denza, Yangwang, and Fangchengbao brands, while Chery introduced a new luxury off-road electric hybrid brand, Zongheng.

Artificial intelligence integration emerged as a defining trend. Geely showcased its latest AI-driven systems, while several brands unveiled concept vehicles powered by next-generation intelligent platforms.

Meanwhile, Huawei drew major attention with its expanding automotive ecosystem, debuting new models and advanced autonomous driving systems capable of urban navigation.

New-energy startups also made a strong showing. NIO presented its three brands together for the first time, while Li Auto unveiled a new flagship SUV equipped with advanced lidar and extended electric range.

Facing mounting pressure in China’s competitive EV market, multinational automakers launched an aggressive counteroffensive. BMW and Mercedes-Benz premiered new China-focused electric models built on dedicated EV platforms. Volkswagen showcased its largest-ever EV lineup, including a new range-extended SUV tailored to local consumers.

Japanese and American brands, including Toyota and Nissan, also introduced China-specific electric vehicles, signaling accelerated localization efforts.

A notable shift at this year’s show is the integration of automakers and suppliers within shared exhibition spaces, reflecting a broader industry move toward ecosystem collaboration. Battery giant CATL and other suppliers displayed next-generation technologies, including solid-state and sodium-ion batteries expected to enter mass production later this decade.

Experts say the event highlights a global industry transition. While traditional auto shows in Europe and North America scale back, Beijing’s continues to expand, reinforcing China’s role as the epicenter of automotive innovation.

“The center of gravity of the global auto industry is shifting,” said industry analysts, pointing to China’s leadership in electrification, intelligent driving, and supply chain integration. The 2026 Beijing Auto Show runs through early May, drawing global attention to the future of mobility.
