Iran, US Agreement Nears Signing
The United States and Iran said that they have reached an agreement. The agreement is expected to come into effect on Friday.
After this agreement, US President Donald Trump will lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened once the deal is formally signed.
However, the complete details of the agreement have not yet been made public, the CNN reported.
The US President Donald Trump will be in France for the G-7 summit, where the war is expected to be in the spotlight. The US and Iran have offered conflicting accounts of the next steps following a signing ceremony in Geneva on Friday after the summit.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister, however, said negotiations will begin when the US releases billions in frozen funds, but an American official has rejected the claim.
Pakistan’s foreign minister has confirmed the Swiss city of Geneva as the venue for the agreement signing on Friday between the United States and Iran.
Pakistan foreign minister Ishaq Dar wrote on X: “We look forward to the formal signing ceremony on 19 June in Geneva.”
Describing the development as a “significant breakthrough,” the minister said it “provides much-needed confidence and stability to global markets and the world economy, particularly for developing countries that are most vulnerable to regional instability.”
He thanked Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey as some of the countries that had had provided “support and sincere diplomatic efforts” in ensuring this “important milestone.”
US officials were concerned the prospective agreement with Iran was on the brink of collapse after Israel targeted Hezbollah in Beirut’s southern suburbs, leading to hurried attempts to preserve the framework, according to sources.
Going back and forth with Qatari officials, who had been in Tehran to try to get the agreement completed, US officials sought to prevent further conflict, the sources said.
What did Iran and the US say about the deal?
The secretariat of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said on Monday that the deal with the US includes the immediate suspension of hostilities on all fronts, Aljazeera reported.
“Based on the agreements reached, the war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, will end immediately and permanently as of tonight, and in addition, the naval blockade against Iran will end immediately and completely,” it said in a statement.
“Negotiations for a final agreement will be postponed until after the other party has fulfilled its obligations under the MoU. The Islamic Republic of Iran appreciates the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Government of Qatar. Peace be upon you, God’s mercy and blessing.
Announcing the agreement, US President Trump said the deal will bring peace and security to the whole region.
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” he said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
On last Saturday, Prime Minister Shehbaz said that a “final, agreed-upon” text of the peace deal between Tehran and Washington had been reached, adding that Islamabad was working “closely” with both sides to finalise the next steps of the process.
