KE connects with KANUPP through 500 KV Grid Station
KARACHI: The K-Electric has been connected with the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) by completing construction of 500 KV Grid Stations in shortest period of time, announced its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Monis Abdullah Alvi.
Alvi said, “it is an historic moment for K-Electric as its electric transmission system has been connected with 500 KV National Grid Station with KANUPP.”
He said that it would be the cheapest electricity for industries and residents of Karachi.” The National Grid will make it possible to supply cheap electricity to Karachi, the CEO claimed.
K-Electric, with the launch its State-of-the-Art 500 KV KKI Grid, is enabling dispatch of reliable and affordable electricity from the National Grid to Karachi. This significant interconnection aims to enhance energy security for local industries and the southern region.
The newly constructed Grid is expected to meet the growing electricity demands of the megacity, providing a stable and efficient power supply that has long been waiting. Officials anticipate that the new grid will help reduce electricity shortages and improve the overall quality of power delivered to consumers.
Various organizations made this achievement possible. K-Electric expressed sincere gratitude to the Government of Pakistan, the Government of Sindh, NEPRA, NPCC, NTDC, PAEC, Siemens, NESPAK, and other stakeholders for their cross-cutting collaboration and support.
Their dedication enabled the completion of Karachi’s first 500 KV grid in record time, following its groundbreaking in December 2022.
Officials highlighted the importance of this project for Karachi’s economic landscape. With a more consistent electricity supply, industries in the region can operate more efficiently, driving growth and development.
The successful launch of the KKI Grid marks a new chapter in Karachi’s energy journey, promising to improve the lives of its residents and foster industrial advancement. K-Electric aims at to continue providing better service and support for the city’s expanding energy needs.
The construction of the Kanupp-2 and Kanupp-3 reactor units started in August 2015 and May 2016. The two new units started commercial operations in May 2021 and April 2022 respectively.
The units will have a design life of 60 years, and will account for approximately 10% of the country’s total generation capacity.
