PM Imran, COAS meet to discuss security situation

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan met with Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Wednesday to discuss contemporary security situation in wake of threats after the Supreme Court’s verdict in Asia Bibi case, said Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry.

The COAS and Prime Minister Imran Khan held a meeting at PM House.

The federal minister in a tweet said that the PM and army chief discussed important matters and overall situation of the country.

“The entire nation is united for Pakistan’s peace, stability and security,” Chaudhry said in a Twitter post.

Earlier, the prime minister delivered an address after the SC acquitted and ordered the release of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman who was earlier sentenced to death on blasphemy charges.

PM Imran Khan fully backed the apex court’s decision in the Asia Bibi case, warning protesters against clashing with the State.

A three-judge special bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel heard Bibi’s 2014 appeal against her conviction and death sentence under section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Supporters of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) took to the streets in several parts of the country today after the judgement in the case.

Protests were being staged in different cities including Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, with major roads blocked.

Following the protests, Section 144 was imposed across Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan barring the gathering of more than four persons in public places as well as pillion riding. Section 144 has been imposed from October 31 to November 10.

According to sources, the federal government directed provincial governments to summon session related to law and order.

A session will be held under Chief Commissioner Islamabad, sources said, adding that Deputy CC Islamabad, DIGs, SSPs, SP have also been called to attend it.

In the meeting, opening routes in the twin cities will be discussed and also removing protestors peacefully from the areas, sources informed.

In case of protestors not dispersing peacefully, operation strategy will also be considered, sources added.
