US Hits Iran’s Qeshm Island Ahead of Midterm Elections
The United States has launched limited military strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh tensions between Washington and Tehran ahead of the US midterm elections.
According to US officials cited by CBS News, the strikes were carried out in response to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) firing on a US aircraft. The officials described the operation as limited in scope.
Meanwhile, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported several explosions on Qeshm Island on Monday. The BBC said it had contacted US Central Command (CENTCOM) for further details.
Trump Faces Pressure Over Iran War
The latest military action comes at a politically sensitive time for US President Donald Trump, who is facing declining approval ratings and growing pressure from members of his own Republican Party to bring the war to an end.
The conflict began in February when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Since then, concerns have increased over the war’s economic and political consequences.
However, Trump said on Monday that he was in no rush to intensify military operations against Iran.
Speaking to Axios, he said the United States would take action when necessary but insisted there was no immediate urgency.
“We crippled them financially,” Trump said, adding that Iran had no money, limited fuel supplies and a population increasingly frustrated by the conflict.
Trump Warns of Possible Strike on Nuclear Site
In a separate interview with Fox News, Trump suggested that the United States could target a facility known as Pickaxe, which is linked to Iran’s nuclear programme.
He described a potential operation against the site as “not a big deal” and said it could be completed within an hour.
His comments have fuelled speculation that Washington could consider renewed military operations against Iran after the midterm elections.
Nevertheless, when reporters asked whether the United States planned to resume major strikes after the elections, Trump denied that such a decision had been made.
Iran Says Diplomatic Talks Are Underway
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said intensive negotiations with the United States were continuing through mediators.
Speaking to IRNA, Araghchi said Tehran remained prepared for both diplomatic negotiations and possible military developments.
He stressed that Washington must choose between pursuing a diplomatic solution and making what he described as another mistake through military aggression.
Iran Conflict Adds Pressure Ahead of US Midterm Elections
The latest developments could have significant political implications as Americans prepare for the midterm elections, which will determine whether Republicans or Democrats control Congress.
Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict is emerging as an important political issue, particularly as some Republicans increasingly call for an end to the war.
Although the US president has suggested that further military action remains possible, ongoing diplomatic efforts indicate that negotiations have not completely broken down.
For now, tensions remain high in the Strait of Hormuz, while the future of US military operations against Iran remains uncertain
